The vital role of our Bees in our garden
This year, we’ve welcomed 2 bee populations on our vegetables land :)
We were gifted them, and have had much experience with bee populations over the last 6 years, that we accepted them with joy!
In a permaculture garden, every element is interconnected, working together to create a resilient, self-sustaining ecosystem, and the bees are crucial for an ecosystem well being, because they are mighty stewards of biodiversity, fertility, and abundance.
We would have them even without hosting any population, however, it allows us to have their honey, and them to be well fed during winter. Also, hosting them ensures many primary pollinators for our countless crops, from fruit trees to vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Their work ensures that plants reproduce efficiently, leading to higher yields, stronger genetic diversity, and more resilient ecosystems. Without bees, many plants would struggle to set fruit, drastically reducing food production.
And this enhances biodiversity, because bees also support wild plants, which in turn provide habitat and food for birds, insects, and other wildlife; they contribute to soil fertility indirectly by pollinating plants that improve the land.
Many perennials, including fruit trees, berries, and medicinal herbs, depend heavily on bees. A strong bee population ensures these plants flourish, providing long-term yields with minimal intervention.
To conclude, beeswax, propolis, and honey, apply to many use that make us more self-sufficient!
To welcome the bees in your garden:
✔Plant a Bee-friendly polyculture – with flowering plants that bloom at different times, include lavender, borage, sunflowers, and fruit tree blossoms
✔ Avoid Pesticides and Chemicals – use companion planting and biological pest control instead
✔ Provide Water Sources – a shallow dish with stones or floating wood gives bees a safe place to drink.
✔ Create Nesting Habitats – Leave some bare soil, dead wood, or install bee hotels for solitary bees
✔ Consider Beekeeping
✔ Let Some Plants Go to Seed
They will make your regenerative space for living a healthy life!
