Why a Permaculture Summer School Is Worth It — Even If You Only Have a Balcony
Hello everyone!
As some of you know, the spots for the Summer School are slowly but constantly filling up - our team is sharing tasks, whilst imagining how it will be like, and we thought it would also be nice for you to imagine how can such teaching benefit you, even if you only have a small balcony. Here we go:
If you’re someone who dreams of growing your own food but only has a balcony or small terrace to work with, you might wonder if attending a permaculture summer school on an organic vegetable field is really for you.
What we think?
Yes — absolutely!
… even if your garden is no bigger than a table, this experience can change how you grow, think, and live.
Permaculture is more than just gardening. It’s a way of observing and working with nature that can be applied to any space, no matter the size. By spending time in an organic vegetable field, you get hands-on practice with systems that can be scaled down, because you’ll learn about soil health, companion planting, water conservation, and composting — all of which can be adapted to pots and containers: for example, understanding how to support the soil food web can help you grow healthier herbs in your window boxes, with fewer pests and less need for fertilizer!
Being in the field also gives you something the internet can’t: real-world experience and community. You’ll meet people of all backgrounds who share your interest in sustainable living. Conversations around a compost pile or shared lunches outdoors can lead to new ideas and friendships. Even if you only have space for a few pots, you’ll leave inspired and equipped to grow smarter and more sustainably.
And finally, there’s something deeply grounding about working with the earth. Touching the soil, harvesting vegetables, and seeing natural systems in motion can reconnect you with the rhythms of the seasons — even if your own growing space is a third-floor balcony.
In short, a permaculture summer school is yes a preparation for your big garden, but will presently serve you to grow better, live more lightly, and feel part of a bigger ecological picture!
