From zero to hive
WHAT TO EXPECT AT OUR BEEKEEPING WORKSHOP
Bees can be non-stinging friends!
Bees are fascinating, and we thought about keeping them for a long time!
We went through 7 years of practical studies, managing populations, before starting managing our own: we started with 2, we now have 4.
Becoming a beekeeper is a matter of experience, and it’s by getting started that we noticed the numerous benefits.
Bees are different:
so many species
with so many functions.
They keep the garden clean, pollinate, make honey, adjust the ecosystem, build hives or nests… and they are super cute as well!
With us, you learn how to
observe them and how to
manage them without chemicals.
In a workshop that can be taken in a day, on a true permaculture farm.
We will start with a tour of the farm, an introduction of the participants and the theory of the hive.
Moving on to the aperture of the hives: no gloves, no protection, just good vibes.
There, we will be showing their life, habits, routines… all things you need to know for the future management of your population.
We will
• find the queen or understand how to notice if she’s there even if you don’t momentarily see her
• observe the larvae
• spot eventual mites and diseases
• learn how to distinguish males from females and the function of both in their system
• talk about honey harvest
• see different colonies and highlight different behaviours
So you learn what ‘normal’ looks like and what needs attention, and you can bring this practical knowledge home.
After the practical part, we will gather again to discuss the steps for you to start your beekeeping exploration, from the tools you need to what to read, who to reference to when you need to buy them, and we will walk you through the first months with your colony.
And after having answered all of your questions, we will have a rich lunch all together!
